Skymedia Conversion
TeraLogics supported the “SkyMedia conversion” from commercial to DoD-based SATCOM using Global Broadcast Service (GBS) and real-time, worldwide IP-over-DVB metrics tracking. We worked with our clients, building on each success to meet the next round of needs – including our “beyond the requirement” invention of MetriX.
Background
The SkyMedia Satellite Communications (SATCOM) program disseminates commercial imagery to a worldwide network. The original architecture used commercially leased satellite services. SkyMedia systems have been transitioned to the Global Broadcast Service (GBS). Use of this Department of Defense (DoD) network and the associated Internet Protocol over Digital Video Broadcast (IP-over-DVB) technology will increase overall capability and streamline operational costs.
TeraLogics’ Response
This project is an example of how we work together with clients to seamlessly and effectively address evolving needs. We supported SkyMedia requirements in partnership with our contract prime, General Dynamics.
A logical, phased approach to solving multi-part problems

Installation and deployment
TeraLogics was initially engaged to reengineer and accredit the existing SkyMedia system, including computers, antennas, cabling and software. These activities enabled the system to receive and process the GBS satellite broadcast. Our installation and deployment activities took place at locations around the world and included:
- Site surveys and planning
- Installation scheduling and coordination
- Placement and pointing of new antennas
- Running new cable to the server
- Deployment of newly developed administration software
- Integration of the system into local environments
- Systems test and checkout
- Post-deployment usage and analysis checkout
- GBS migration support
- Tier III help desk support
One-click installation and Information Assurance
As part of this effort, TeraLogics went “beyond the requirement” to design and develop a “one click” automated installation process and Information Assurance (IA) certification solution to ensure that each site’s installation was identical and a type certification could be obtained. Supporting activities included development of custom scripts, procedures and policies to ensure correct installation and compliance with security guidelines. TeraLogics’ solution resulted in a three-year Authority to Operate (ATO) for the new GBS receive suites.
TeraLogics completed the entire design, automation and integration process ahead of schedule and in time for the initial site transition deployment. As a result, the client requested TeraLogics’ additional involvement as the project’s third on-site installation and transition team.
