Unified Video Dissemination System (UVDS)
TeraLogics is the primary architect for UVDS, viewed by many as the future of FMV dissemination for the Department of Defense enterprise and the extended FMV community. We are inventors of the UVDS Tactical Edge Server (UTES). UVDS and UTES will optimize resources for national and tactical users worldwide.
Background
What if… vital intelligence existed, but you couldn’t access it in time or in a usable format? Or you had to deploy troops based on raw video, but without the metadata that adds meaning? The UVDS project and TeraLogics’ solutions address these challenges, and more.
UVDS is an enterprise video collection, dissemination and exploitation capability that provides real-time routing, ingest, normalization and dissemination services for Full Motion Video (FMV) across the Global Information Grid (GIG). Developed in conjunction with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), UVDS provides timely access to the highest-possible-quality Unmanned Aerial Systems FMV (UAS FMV) feeds, virtually unlimited access to computing resources, and consistent support for existing and emerging standards. This unified, end-to-end approach enables users worldwide to find, obtain and consume real time and non-real time Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance FMV (ISR FMV) and metadata, quickly and easily, over existing networks and paths.
Result: Intelligence on location, on demand, in an easy-to-use format.
Unique Engineering Activities
- Design, testing and integration of a capability to ingest and store H.264 and MPEG-2 streaming video
- Quick-reaction engineering and integration solution based on existing commercial off-the-shelf and government off-the-shelf (COTS/GOTS) hardware and software, to satisfy urgent operational requirement for dissemination of FMV to other commands
- Evaluation of COTS/GOTS system, focusing on immediate implementation while providing a systems architecture to support future implementations
- Customization of IP multicast content-delivery applications including the KenCast Fazzt system, H.264 and MPEG-2 streaming video, web crawling, and other file and stream dissemination solutions
TeraLogics’ Response
TeraLogics was awarded the Defense Acquisition Challenge Program (DACP) to develop this next-generation system. TeraLogics is also architect of the UVDS UTES, extending the UVDS enterprise into bandwidth-constrained tactical environments.
As the primary architect of UVDS, TeraLogics’ supporting activities include:
- System architecture, design, development and implementation
- Database/software modeling
- Interface design and development
- Hardware installation and configuration
- Project management
- Testing in our lab
We are responsible for end-to-end capabilities including ingest, real-time routing, dissemination services, caching and storage, enterprise delivery, and related project considerations.
We are integrating this newly developed system into DoD’s Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) enterprise network. We have also identified and developed the method for integrating the system into Defense Knowledge Online (DKO), enabling users to work with information simply and easily in a familiar environment.
UVDS Tactical Edge Server (UTES)
TeraLogics has gone “beyond the requirement” addressing related challenges with our invention of UTES. TeraLogics’ UTES is an end-user device that provides local FMV dissemination and normalization, synchronizes metadata with the UVDS enterprise, and optimizes bandwidth. It serves as a core component, extending the UVDS enterprise system into bandwidth-constrained tactical environments. Tactical and enterprise users benefit from improved awareness and management of UAS operations and associated FMV. UTES integrates with the global enterprise on a secure and scalable platform.
UVDS – and its companion UTES – are just two examples of projects applying TeraLogics’ expertise in FMV, software engineering and integration, and system and next-generation architecture planning and design.
